When Travel Made Care Hard, One Air Force Veteran Kept Therapy Moving From Home

After prostate surgery made travel and crowded waiting rooms difficult, Air Force Veteran Gerry Pennington used VA TelePhysical Therapy to continue pelvic-floor care through VA Video Connect.

THE SHORT VERSIONTelehealth can preserve continuity and dignity for the right Veteran and the right care plan. Ask the care team whether it is clinically appropriate and available where you receive VA care.
WHO SHOULD READ THIS

Veterans whose mobility, recovery, distance, symptoms, or anxiety makes consistent in-person rehabilitation difficult

01

The story

Recovery did not pause when getting to clinic became stressful.

Gerry Pennington, a 68-year-old Air Force Veteran, was recovering from prostate removal when urinary incontinence made travel and crowded VA waiting rooms uncomfortable. VA reports that he began meeting with a TelePhysical Therapy provider through VA Video Connect every two weeks.

The goal was not to replace every part of rehabilitation with a screen. The virtual visits helped him continue pelvic-floor education, symptom review, and home exercises without adding a difficult trip to a hard recovery.

02

Why it matters

Access is part of care.

A missed therapy plan can become a stalled therapy plan when transportation, distance, pain, symptoms, or anxiety keep getting in the way. TelePhysical Therapy can be a practical bridge when the provider determines virtual care is appropriate.

Availability and suitability vary by VA location, treatment need, technology access, and clinical judgment. The story is evidence of an option—not a guarantee.

03

Practical next move

What to do with this information.

  1. Tell your VA care team when travel, symptoms, mobility, or anxiety is making it hard to keep appointments.
  2. Ask whether VA Video Connect or TelePhysical Therapy is available and clinically appropriate for your specific plan of care.
  3. Do not skip an urgent, hands-on, or required in-person evaluation on the assumption that it can be replaced with telehealth.
  4. If virtual care is offered, ask what equipment, privacy, connection quality, and follow-up plan you will need.
