The VA App Now Lets Veterans See and Challenge Benefit Debts
New VA Health and Benefits app features let Veterans manage benefit overpayments and view lab results from a phone.

What changed
Benefit overpayments are now visible in the app.
The VA Health and Benefits mobile app now lets Veterans view and manage overpayment debts connected to disability compensation, pension, and education benefits.
From the Payments section, a Veteran can review the balance and stated reason for the debt, make a payment, request financial assistance, or dispute the debt.
Why it matters
A debt notice should not be ignored—or assumed correct.
Overpayments can arise after dependency changes, benefit adjustments, education enrollment changes, incarceration reporting, or other updates. The exact reason and dates matter.
The new app tools make it easier to see the issue and take an initial action. Veterans should still save the formal notice, confirm the amount and period involved, and read the stated review and waiver rights before choosing a response.
Health update
Lab results now travel with the same app.
Veterans can also view lab and test results from the Health section of the app. Results can be filtered by date and opened for additional detail.
The app already supports claim and appeal status checks, document uploads, decision-letter downloads, payment history, prescription refills, secure messages, appointments, and mileage-only travel claims.
Practical next move
What to do with this information.
- Open Payments, then Overpayments, and compare the balance and reason with the formal VA debt notice.
- Download and preserve relevant decision letters, payment records, dependency filings, or enrollment records.
- If you disagree with the debt or cannot afford collection, review the dispute, waiver, and financial-assistance options promptly.
- Use the app for access and tracking, but rely on the written notice for the specific response rights and deadlines attached to your case.
