How to Download a Fresh VA Benefit Summary Letter

Agencies keep rejecting your VA letter because it's "too old"? VA re-issues the benefit summary letter on demand, dated today. Three minutes on VA.gov — here's exactly what to click, what to include, and what to leave off.

Audience: Any veteran asked for a "current" VA letter — business certifications (CA DVBE, SBA VetCert SDVOSB), employers, lenders, state benefit offices

TAKEAWAY

Your VA benefit summary letter is not a one-time document. VA.gov regenerates it on demand with the current date, every time. When an agency demands a letter dated within the last 6 months, you don't request anything — you download a fresh one.

Why you'd do this

Sooner or later, somebody official asks for "a copy of your VA award letter" — and then adds the part nobody warns you about: it has to be current.

Real example, because it just happened here: California's DVBE certification and the SBA's VetCert (SDVOSB) certification both require a VA letter dated within 6 months of the day you file. The rating behind the letter doesn't expire. The paper does. A letter you downloaded last year gets a 100% P&T veteran's certification packet bounced for staleness — not for anything wrong with the claim.

Same story in other uniforms: an employer verifying veteran status, a lender, a state office processing a property-tax exemption or a park pass. They want proof of your rating with a recent date on it.

Here's what VA doesn't put on a billboard: the letter is self-serve. VA.gov's letter tool generates a brand-new PDF, dated the day you download it, as many times as you want. No request, no waiting period, no phone tree. The "stale letter" problem is a three-minute problem.

Before you start

A verified VA.gov sign-in — Login.gov or ID.me, identity-verified. (If you still sign in the old ways in your head: DS Logon and My HealtheVet sign-in are retired. Login.gov or ID.me are the doors now.)

A PDF reader — the letter downloads as a PDF.

Two minutes to check one thing first: the mailing address VA has on file for you prints on the letter. The tool will show it to you before it generates anything. Wrong address doesn't invalidate the letter — VA says so itself — but if it's wrong, fix it in your VA.gov profile anyway. A stale address on file causes bigger problems than a letter (see HOW-009 when it lands).

The steps

Go to va.gov/records/download-va-letters and sign in. (You can also get there from VA.gov's top menu: Records → Download VA benefit letters.)

Review the address VA shows you. That's the address that will print on the letter. Update it if it's wrong; keep moving either way.

Under Service history and disability compensation, choose Benefits and service summary — on the letter list it's the Benefit Summary and Service Verification Letter. This is the one agencies mean when they say "VA award letter."

Set the letter options (next section — this is the step that matters):

Include: your combined service-connected disability rating percentage

Include: the statement that you are permanently and totally disabled (this line only exists in your options if VA has you rated P&T — if it's there, include it; certifications like DVBE and VetCert are looking for exactly this)

Leave OFF: the monthly payment amount

Download the PDF. Check the date on it — it's today's. Save it somewhere you can find it again, with a name you'll recognize in six months when you do this again: VA-benefit-letter-2026-10-31.pdf beats download (3).pdf every time.

That's the whole task. No submission, no confirmation number, nothing "processing." The letter exists the second the PDF lands.

Gotchas — read these before you send the letter anywhere

Leave the money off. The monthly payment amount is an option, not a requirement. A certification agency needs your rating and your P&T status — not your income. Neither does an employer. The one time you include the amount is when the amount itself is the point: a lender or housing program verifying VA income. Match the letter to the ask.

This letter does NOT list your individual conditions. It shows the combined rating only — no itemized breakdown of which conditions at what percentages. That's by design, and for agency tests it's enough: DVBE's bar is a service-connected disability of 10% or more, VetCert needs the VA letter as proof of service-connected status — a combined rating answers both. If a specific filing ever demands the condition-by-condition list, that lives in two other places: your rating decision letter, and VA.gov's "View your disability rating" page, which shows every service-connected condition and its percentage. Pulling that breakdown is HOW-002 in this series.

Fresh is a habit, not an event. Any time a filing, an employer, or an office asks for your letter, download a new one that day instead of forwarding the copy in your files. The date is the whole game, and a same-day download always wins it.

The address on it is the address on file. See the "Before you start" note — if the tool shows you an address from two duty stations ago, that's VA telling you your profile needs ten minutes of attention beyond this letter.

If it won't download

Can't sign in? Use VA.gov's sign-in help for Login.gov / ID.me identity verification — an unverified account can't pull letters.

Letter won't generate or won't open? VA points download problems to its MyVA411 main information line: 1-800-698-2411 (TTY: 711).

No computer route at all? Call the VA benefits line at 1-800-827-1000 and request the letter by mail, or have it printed at a VA regional office. Slower — which is why you don't wait until the filing deadline to discover you need it.

Actions

Download a fresh letter today if any application, certification, or job file of yours is carrying one older than 6 months — DVBE and VetCert filings will bounce the stale one.

Name and file the PDF with its date in the filename, so "which copy is current" never becomes a question.

Check the address VA showed you — if it's wrong, update your VA.gov profile now, not during your next deadline.

Education only. VA Claim Buster is a free educational resource. We are not VA-accredited, we don't file claims or certification applications, and nothing here is legal or medical advice or a promise of any outcome. Requirements for programs like DVBE and VetCert are set by those agencies — verify the current requirement with the agency you're filing with.
