Alpha Point // Pre-Filing Route

What to Do Before Filing Your First VA Claim

Fast is not the same as ready. Before you hit submit, know what you are claiming, what each piece of evidence is supposed to prove, and which missing record or deadline can blow a hole in the plan.

01

01 // Define the mission

Name the mission before you start feeding VA documents.

If you cannot explain each claimed issue in one clean sentence, the file is not ready—it is just carrying paperwork. List each condition or increase, the current problem, the service event or already service-connected condition you believe relates to it, and the evidence supporting that connection.

This is a planning worksheet, not a diagnosis. If the medical question is unclear, identify that uncertainty instead of guessing or forcing the evidence into a theory it does not support.

  • Name the condition or benefit issue.
  • Identify whether this is an original, secondary, increased-rating, or review matter.
  • Record the strongest supporting evidence and the largest known gap.
  • Separate facts you can personally report from medical conclusions that require qualified evidence.
02

02 // Build the file

VA does not award points for document tonnage.

A 600-page upload can still prove absolutely nothing with impressive weight. VA identifies medical records, service records, discharge documents, and supporting statements as common evidence sources. A document earns its place when it helps establish a fact that matters to the claim.

Create one evidence list for each claimed issue. Note what you already possess, what VA may obtain from federal sources, and what private records still need authorization or direct submission.

03

03 // Protect the clock

Choose the route before the calendar chooses it for you.

Deadlines do not care that you were waiting for one more perfect record. VA says starting an online disability application can establish the potential date of claim if the application is completed within 365 days. A paper filer may consider an Intent to File while gathering evidence.

Save confirmation pages, submission receipts, and copies of what was filed. If a deadline, prior denial, or effective date is involved, consider help from a VA-accredited representative before selecting the lane.

  • Confirm contact and direct-deposit information before submission.
  • Review every claimed issue and uploaded file one final time.
  • Keep the submission confirmation and a complete copy of the package.
  • Calendar expected follow-up tasks and watch for exam scheduling.
