Alpha Point // Claim Pending
You Filed.
Now Hold the Line.
The claim is in. Welcome to the “hurry up and check VA.gov again” phase. This is where people hurt their own file—not because they do nothing, but because anxiety convinces them to start doing everything.
Refreshing the status page does not move the claim. Uploading the same records again does not make them stronger.
Situation awareness
The status bar is not a Domino's tracker.
VA's online status tool shows where a claim is in the process. The labels can change, and a claim can move backward when VA needs more evidence. That is not automatically a bad sign.
Claim received
VA has your claim.
Initial review
VA checks for basic required information.
Evidence gathering
VA reviews records, requests information, or schedules exams. This is usually the longest stage.
Evidence review
VA reviews the evidence it has gathered or received.
Rating and decision preparation
VA makes the decision and prepares the notification.
Final review
VA completes a final review before issuing the decision.
The status is a checkpoint, not a countdown clock. It can return to evidence gathering if VA needs something else—or if you add evidence after it has moved forward.
Execution discipline
Respond to the request VA sent—not the one anxiety invented.
Check your mail, email, phone messages, and VA.gov claim status. If VA asks for records, releases, or information, deal with the request. Do not assume somebody else is handling it.
Do not let a deadline expire because you never opened the letter. VA may decide the claim using the record it has.
C&P readiness
Do not miss a C&P exam.
VA may schedule a Compensation & Pension exam when it needs more information to decide service connection or evaluate severity. Not every claim requires one—VA may use existing medical evidence instead.
- Show up and be on time.
- Describe symptoms and limitations honestly.
- Do not minimize them out of habit.
- Do not perform for the examiner.
- Use the contact information in the appointment notice promptly.
- Do not ignore the appointment.
- Keep a record of the contact you make.
- Follow the directions in the notice.
Evidence control
Submit evidence with a purpose. Nervous is not a purpose.
You can submit evidence while a disability claim is pending. But every document should answer a real question in the file.
- VA requested it.
- It fills a missing record or gap.
- It directly supports the condition, service event, connection, or severity at issue.
- You are nervous because the status has not changed.
- You found the same records already submitted.
- Somebody online told you to upload everything again.
It can slow the file down and bury what actually matters. Do not add random conditions or conflicting statements just because the claim is open.
Act on the signal
Know when status actually matters.
- A request for evidence or information.
- A scheduled C&P exam.
- A document you uploaded online.
- A change in the claim's listed issues.
- A completed decision.
When the status shows complete, read the decision letter before doing anything else. Do not rely on rumors, partial screenshots, or the percentage you hoped to see.
It tells you what VA decided, why it decided it, and what deadlines apply next.
