FORM-001 // Disability claim form watch

VA Wants to Cut Form 21-526EZ From 15 Pages to 5. Do Not Use the Proposal as the Form.

VA’s simplified disability-compensation application is under OMB review. The proposal is real, but Veterans should keep using the current official filing method until VA releases the replacement.

4 minute readSource verified
THE SHORT VERSIONA shorter form may reduce paperwork, but it does not reduce the proof a claim needs. Use the current official form or VA.gov process until VA publishes the replacement.
WHO SHOULD READ THIS

Veterans preparing an initial disability claim or claim for increase, survivors helping with a filing, and anyone advising a claimant about which form to use

01

What is proposed

Fifteen pages would become five, with a lower estimated completion time.

VA Form 21-526EZ is used for disability-compensation claims, including initial claims and claims for increase. VA has submitted a proposed revision of the currently approved information collection to the Office of Management and Budget.

VA says the redesign would reduce the form from 15 pages to 5 and lower the estimated completion time from 25 minutes to 15. The stated target is the end of calendar year 2026, and VA’s July announcement described December 2026 as the projected availability.

02

Current status

The package is under review. The replacement is not yet the filing form.

The Federal Register item is an information-collection notice for a revision. It is evidence that VA is pursuing the change, not evidence that the public-facing form has already been replaced.

A Veteran with a filing deadline should not wait for a projected redesign without understanding what delay could do to an effective date or other time-sensitive right.

03

What does not change

Less paper does not mean less evidence.

The claim still has to identify the benefit sought and provide enough information for VA to process it. The underlying evidentiary questions—current disability, in-service event or qualifying starting point, connection, severity, and effective date—do not disappear because the form becomes shorter.

A clean form can start a claim. It cannot replace medical records, competent statements, examinations, or other evidence needed for the issue being decided.

04

Practical next move

What to do with this information.

  1. Use the version of VA Form 21-526EZ currently published by VA, or file through the current VA.gov disability-claim process.
  2. Do not delay a time-sensitive filing solely because VA projects a shorter form later in 2026.
  3. Preserve the submission confirmation and a complete copy of everything filed.
  4. Check the official VA form page before using a saved copy from a third-party website.
